Colombia's Juan Pablo Montoya judged his final run to perfection to grab pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

Formula One rookie Montoya snatched the important first place on the grid from Williams-BMW team-mate Ralf Schumacher on a shocking day for David Coulthard.

Ferrari's newly-crowned world champion Michael Schumacher cruised to a comfortable third place, with the German celebrating his 10th anniversary in Formula One.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen also conjured up a late flying lap to take an unexpected fourth spot - Prost's best of the year - with Rubens Barrichello fifth for Ferrari and Jacques Villeneuve sixth for BAR.

McLaren's Coulthard, whose time on the track has been severely restricted, was back in ninth spot - his worst of the campaign - with Jenson Button 15th for Benetton and Eddie Irvine 17th for Jaguar.
