![]()
All the action from the 78 laps in Monte Carlo.
Parade lap: David Coulthard has stalled on the grid - the other 21 cars stream past. The Scot will have to start from the back of the grid. Team-mate Mika Hakkinen had a stutter but did manage to get around in the correct position. Start: Everyone gets away safely. Michael Schumacher leads Hakkinen. Then Barrichello, as Coulthard is stranded at the back but in the race. Lap 1: Nick Heidfeld ploughs into the wall before the Portier corner but the snake of other cars avoids the Sauber. 2: Schumacher has a 1.5 second lead over Hakkinen. Behind, a gap is opening as Irvine, in sixth, loses time to the leading five. 3: Montoya, who has just set the fastest lap, overdoes it at the swimming pool and smashes into the barrier. The others get past. 4: Michael Schumacher increases his advantage, setting the fastest lap - 1:23.380 5: Michael opens up another seven tenths with Hakkinen drifting back, under pressure from Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Coulthard is up to 18th due to the retirements and two successful overtaking manouevres around this tight circuit. 6: Hakkinen is slightly faster but is now almost 2.5 seconds back, with Barrichello four seconds adrift of his team leader. Coulthard is frustrated - stuck behind the two Arrows with few chances to solve his problem of a 31 second deficit to the lead. 7: Hakkinen goes under 1:23 to set a new fastest lap and chop Schumacher's lead to 1.6 seconds. 9: Michael Schumacher's response is another fastest lap. Ralf is losing the leading trio and is now 10 seconds behind his brother. 10: A flap has come off Jenson Button's Benetton but doesn't appear to be causing anyone major problems, although Coulthard has just driven over it. 11: Luciano Burti, in last place, is about to be lapped by leader Schumacher. Olivier Panis has stopped early for new tyres - he may have had a puncture. 12: More misery for McLaren. Hakkinen has been passed by Barrichello at the end of the tunnel - after slowing and losing six seconds on the lap. 13: Ralf Schumacher passes Hakkinen, who pits. He's surprised the crew who do get him away but he is clearly not happy with the car. 14: Panis retires, as does Kimi Rainkonnen as attritional Monaco begins to do its worst. 16: Coulthard is still struggling to pass Bernoldi's Arrows. Hakkinen is back in the pits. Montoya admits that he made a "silly mistake" that cost him his place in the race. 17: Hakkinen retires from the race. Michael Schumacher is six seconds ahead of Barrichello with Ralf now 19 seconds behind the leader. Irvine, Trully and Villeneuve are in the points and the first 30 seconds of the race. 20: Pedro de la Rosa is out, leaving 17 left with 60 laps to go - Raikonnen is back on track but four laps adrift. 22: The top six is unchanged. Giancarlo Fisichella is seventh, followed by Alesia, Frentzen and Verstappen. Button passes Alonso for 11th place, with Bernoldi and then Coulthard stuck in 14th. 23: Eddie Irvine is right up with Ralf Schumacher in the fight for third place. 24: Michael Schumacher will soon be lapping Coulthard, who cannot get past Bernoldi. The Brazilian is stubbornly blocking the Scot, who is losing three seconds a lap. 25: Six down, 16 to go. Luciano Burti stops at the first corner and will retire. 26: Coulthard almost gets through against Bernoldi, who shuts the door. Schumacher then laps the Brazilian, with Coulthard unable to use the situation to his advantage. 27: Michael Schumacher is now 13 seconds clear of team-mate Barrichello. Only a mistake or a problem can stop the world champion - brother Ralf is 25 seconds back. 28: A fastest lap from Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who is in ninth place in the Jordan. 31: Trulli goes off in a plume of flames, dropping oil over the Rascasse corner. 32: Coulthard allows Barrichello to lap him - can he use this situation to get past Bernoldi? No, the Ferrari surges past the Arrows and Coulthard is not close enough. 33: Fisichella takes the first corner too quickly and smacks his back wheel into the barrier. He stays out with no obvious damage although Alesi is right behind. 36: Fastest lap from Ralf Schumacher, then another from Villeneuve. 39: Halfway to the finish with Michael Schumacher setting a new lap record - 1:20.770 is almost a second faster than Hakkinen's previous best from last year. The Ferraris are 14 seconds apart at the front with Ralf keeping his gap to the lead to 25 seconds. 40: Still no scheduled pit stops from the leaders. They are not expected until well after half distance. 42: 1:20.422 is the latest lap record from Michael Schumacher, who is clearly enjoying himself. Verstappen has a 19-second pit stop and then stalls. 43: Fisichella is back in the Ste Devote barrier - and there's no reprieve after his second crash at this point. Alesi is up into the points with Frentzen the only other driver on the leader's lap. 44: Bernoldi makes his pit stop, allowing Coulthard to get past the stubborn Arrows man. 45: Coulthard sets a new lap record - over four seconds faster than he managed behind Bernoldi. 46: Can Coulthard still score points? He is now in ninth place, 33 seconds adrift of Button - and five seconds a lap faster than his fellow Brit. Villeneuve - a lap ahead - is in the way and two seconds a lap slower than Coulthard. 48: Button pits and Coulthard jumps to eighth. Frentzen has also crashed out at the chicane following the tunnel - Coulthard is now seventh. 50: Alesi, a minute ahead of Coulthard, pits and gets out ahead of the Scot. The gap is now 36 seconds, although Coulthard will have to stop. 53: At the front, Michael Schumacher is 18 seconds ahead of Barrichello. Ferrari prepare for their stops. 54: Michael comes into the pits. Seven seconds after stopping he surges out in second, clear of brother Ralf. 56: Alonso retires in a steaming Minardi. Irvine is catching Ralf Schumacher - the gap is 2.8 seconds and falling fast. Coulthard follows Irvine, a lap down, but perhaps set to inherit sixth place if Ralf has to stop. 58: Irvine surges past Ralf, as does Coulthard. Williams' Schumacher brother pits - and retires. Irvine is on the podium and Coulthard in the points. 60: Barrichello stops and Michael re-takes the lead. 61: Irvine makes a rapid stop and gets out to keep third place. Marques' Minardi uses the tunnel chicane escape road to retire. 63: Of the 11 remaining cars, only Coulthard has not stopped. The order is: M Schumacher, Barrichello, Irvine, Villeneuve, Alesi, Coulthard, Button, Verstappen, Bernoldi and Raikonnen 65: Coulthard stops - 6.6 seconds gets him out ahead of Button in seventh pace. Reliability and mistakes apart, the current order looks sure to be the finishing line-up. 67: Coulthard sets another fastest lap but may not be able to catch Alesi, let alone pass him. Irvine has a six seconds lead over Villeneuve inthe race for the final podium position. 68: Alesi pits. Coulthard flies past the Prost at the end of the pitlane, narrowly missing him and picking up fifth. 70: This will probably as high as Coulthard can climb - Villeneuve is 57 seconds ahead with laps running out. The Canadian is still pushing Irvine - the BAR is just 3.7 seconds behind the Jaguar. 73: Irvine responds - gap up to 3.5 seconds. 72: The gap between Irvine and Villenueve is down to 3.1 seconds. 74: This race for third is the only one of interest and the gap is now down to 3.010 seconds. 75: Just 2.3 seconds for Irvine, but surely Villeneuve cannot get past the Jaguar even if he catches it. 76: It looks like an important day for Prost - their first points - and Jaguar, who are set for a first podium. 77: Michael Schumacher begins the final lap, set for yet another win. 78: Michael Schumacher wins, with Barrichello right behind him to take Ferrari's latest one-two finish. Irvine holds off Vileneneuve for third. Coulthard's unlikely two points are confirmed, ahead of Alesi's single one in the Prost.
