Lap-by-lap action from Spielberg where David Coulthard drove a superb race to clinch his second Formula One victory of the season.

Result:
1st: David Coulthard (Britain) McLaren
2nd: Michael Schumacher (Germany) Ferrari
3rd: Rubens Barrichello (Brazil) Ferrari
4th: Kimi Raikkonen (Finland) Sauber
5th: Olivier Panis (France) BAR
6th: Jos Verstappen (Netherlands) Arrows

Race action:
1300 BST: Championship leader Michael Schumacher leaves it to the last minute to take his place in pole position on the starting grid.

Alongside him is the Williams' of Juan Pablo Montoya, starting at the head of the pack for the first time.

Green light: Both Williams' zip straight past Schumacher to take first and second place by the top of the opening hill.

But there's chaos on the starting line as both Jordans are left standing as is Mika Hakkinen in his McLaren and Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber.

As a result the safety car enters the track.

Lap Four: The action restarts with Juan Pablo Montoya leading Ralf Schumacher.

His brother Michael is holding onto third while Rubens Barrichello is sitting right on his tail.

Jos Verstappen, who looks to be light on fuel and heading for an early pit stop, overtakes David Coulthard to move into fifth.

Lap Nine: Ralf Schumacher is forced to pull out with a brake problem allowing his brother Michael to move into second.

Enrique Benoldi overtakes Eddie Irvine, who had a fantastic start given his place back in 13th on the grid, to move into seventh.

Lap 14: Schumacher is right underneath the back of race leader Montoya's Williams, which seems to have a slight problem, but cannot find a way past.

The black flag is waved at Jarno Trulli, who left the pit lane through a red light.

Lap 15: Montoya loses the lead after clashing with Michael Schumacher. Both men spin off but manage to rejoin the race.

Lap 17: The new leader is Rubens Barrichello in his Ferrari but less than five seconds separate the top drivers in what is turning out to be a thrilling tussle.

Verstappen in his Arrows is defying the odds to stay in second, third is David Coulthard, fourth is Kimi Raikkonen, fifth is Panis while Michael Schumacher and Montoya are hanging on.

Lap 22: Verstappen goes in for fuel, getting away in 8.6 seconds, rejoining the race in seventh place.

Lap 24: Michael Schumacher passes Olivier Panis to move into fourth.

Lap 25: Schumacher continues moving back up the field, Kimi Raikkonen moving over to let him back into third.

Lap 35: Montoya follows Schumacher past fifth-placed Olivier Panis.

Lap 39: As the race passes the half way stage, second-placed David Coulthard is all that stands between another Ferrari one-two.

Lap 43: Montoya pulls out of the race with hydraulic problems, joining his Williams team-mate Ralf Schumacher as a spectator.

Lap 44: Ferrari's mechanics troop out as if preparing for a pit stop but it appears to be a bluff as Schumacher and Barrichello steam straight past.

Lap 45: It's Schumacher who dives in first, his crew turning him round in a fantastic 8.7 seconds.

Lap 47: Coulthard hits the front as Barrichello makes his fuel stop, clocking 9.2 in the pits.

But Barrichello hangs on to second from Schumacher after the world champion slides momentarily onto the grass.

Lap 48: A superb fuel stop allows Coulthard to consolidate the lead, his McLaren popping out of the pit lane just ahead of the red nose cone of Ferrari.

Lap 60: Leader David Coulthard drives a perfect closing leg to hold off Barrichello, keeping just out of overtaking range at 0.75 second ahead.

Michael Schumacher is 2.2 seconds further behind Barrichello.

The last car in the race is Jenson Button.

Lap 62: Button pulls out after the engine of his Benetton catches fire.

Lap 65: Coulthard increases his slender lead to 1.6 seconds.

Lap 71: After coming second every year in Austria since 1997, Coulthard takes the chequered flag for his second victory of the year.

An unhappy Barrichello follows orders and moves over to allow fellow Ferrari driver Schumacher to sneak second place.

Retirements during the race: Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Mika Hakkinen, Giancarlo Fisichella, Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli, Enrique Bernoldi, Tarso Marques, Juan Pablo Montoya, Fernando Alonso, Pedro de la Rosa, Jenson Button.
