Southern 100: Martin wins but event red flagged

Guy Martin reversed Tuesday's result to win ahead of Michael Dunlop

Guy Martin won the opening Superbike race of Wednesday's Southern 100 meeting on the Isle of man before racing was later abandoned.

Martin got the better of Michael Dunlop by just 0.047 seconds in a reverse of the previous night's result.

"I'm not a man who is happy with second place, no-one remembers the losers, so tonight's job was what we were looking for," said the Kermington rider.

Dunlop again set a new absolute lap record at 112.393mph.

Ryan Farquhar finished 21 seconds down on Dunlop to complete the podium places with Manx riders Conor Cummins and Dan Kneen completing the top five.

Farquhar and William Dunlop then took respective victories in the 650/250cc race.

Last year's Solo champion at the Billown event set a new lap record of 99.472mph, breaking his own record on way to victory in the 650cc race, ahead of Wayne Hamilton and Ian Lougher, whilst Dunlop took a commanding win the 250cc race ahead of Phil Harvey and Jamie Coward.

The rest of the scheduled programme was abandoned due to the condition of the road, following an incident involving Dave Taylor and Dan Sayle on the Billown section of the course.

Isle of Man rider Sayle was reported unhurt but Taylor was taken to hospital with fractures. A Flag Marshal was also reported to have received leg fractures in the same incident and a spectator was taken to hospital with an eye injury.

The organisers issued a statement following the incident in the 600cc race, saying: "No-one involved has life threatening injuries and racing had to be stopped due to the state of the road and police carrying out a full investigation."

Racing will continue on Thursday with a revised schedule, including both the Solo and Sidecar Championship Races.
