Oxford's Jason Plato set a new record for victories in the British Touring Car Championship with two wins at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

Plato, 43, who recorded his first win in 1997, took his career tally to 62 to pass Andy Rouse's mark of 60 wins.

"Beating Andy Rouse's record is a lovely bonus - he's one of the legendary names I used to watch as a kid," said Plato.

"It's hard to believe that it's been 14 years since my first win in 1997."

The ex-Ascar driver, who won the BTCC title for the second time last season , is now eight points clear of Mat Jackson at the top of the Championship.

"Given the gap to Mat in qualifying I didn't expect to be leading this early, but the chances came our way and we capitalised," he added.

"But I'm already thinking more about the next meeting at Donington - the circuit lay-out there will make the turbos much harder to beat.

"I suspect we're going to be in for more than just a tough weekend."

The second meeting at Donington in Leicester takes place on April 17.
