David Hemsley expecting Leicester Lions sell-out

Hemsley delight at Leicester Lions return

Leicester Lions owner David Hemsley is expecting a capacity crowd when the club returns to action for the first time in 28 years on Saturday.

The new 4,500-capacity stadium at Beaumont Park plays host to a Challenge match against Sheffield on 2 April.

And co-promoter and team boss Hemsley, who has plunged his life savings into the venture, told BBC East Midlands: "The sales are amazing.

"We anticipate being full for the first few meetings."

There has not been a team in Leicester since 1983 when the club's home on Blackbird Road was sold for housing.

But the desire to see the sport back in the East Midlands remained strong thanks to the supporters club and in 2007 the prospect gathered pace with the support of the council.

And the dreams became a reality when Leicester were accepted into the the Premier League by the British Speedway Promoters' Association.

The new season gets under way on Sunday, 10 April with a home fixture against Scunthorpe.

The Lions completed their line-up for the new season with the signing of Richard Sweetman in December.
