Australian Garry McCoy, of Yamaha, has claimed victory in the 500cc class of the Valencia Grand Prix.

He led throughout the 30 laps of the Cheste circuit avoiding the late-race spills by his rival competitors.

McCoy finished at 48:27.799 and five seconds ahead of US rider Kenny Roberts, of Suzuki, who had started the class in the pole position after dominating the qualifiers.

"It was hot out there and hard but I'm really happy," said McCoy.

"Hopefully we can keep this going for the rest of the year."

Behind McCoy

Italian Max Biaggi, of Yamaha, placed third in the class, nearly six seconds behind McCoy.

Spanish favorite Alex Criville of Honda crashed mid-way through the race and walked off the circuit and compatriot Carlos Checa, Yamaha, was run off the track in the 24th lap, ceding third place.

Italian Valentino Rossi of Honda then spilled in lap 28, also losing third place and walking off the track.

Nakano in 250cc

Japan's Shinya Nakano, of Yamaha, rode to an easy victory in the Valencia GP's 250cc class, almost 4.3 seconds ahead of Frenchman Olivier Jacque, also of Yamaha.

Nakano finished the 27 laps of the eastern Cheste circuit in 43:49.140, ahead of Jacque by 4.285 seconds and a full 14.848 seconds ahead of No.3 rider Italian Marco Melandri, of Aprilia.

Japan's Tohru Okawa placed fourth at 14.897 seconds behind Nakano.

Jacque had begun in pole position after obtaining the best time in Saturday's qualifiers.

Locatelli reflects on his win

Meanwhile, Italy's Roberto Locatelli stayed top of the 125cc world championship after an easy win.

The Aprilia rider initially failed to take advantage of his pole position but he was never caught after overtaking Spain's Pablo Nieto on the fourth lap.

Locatelli's only challenging test came during the final stages, when he was challenged strongly by Japan's Masao Azuma but he held off the Honda rider for his fourth victory of the season and fourth consecutive podium finish.

Locatelli covered the 25 laps in 42 minutes 42.27.505 seconds and now leads the standings with 205 points after 13 of the 16 races.

His nearest challneger is the Japanese Derbi rider Youichi Ui, who has 181 points after finishing third on Sunday, although Ui did set a lap record as he tried to close the gap on Locatelli.
