The NW 200 will go ahead on 21 May despite event clash

Next year's North West 200 will take place on the planned date of 21 May despite the event's clash with a World Endurance Championship round in Spain.

Top North West competitors John McGuinness and Keith Amor are scheduled to compete for Honda Europe that day at the World Endurance event in Albacete.

Suggestions that the North West 200 could be moved have been ruled out.

"Many visitors and fans have already made arrangements," said North West 200 technical director Mervyn Whyte.

"Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd had set and announced the date a number of weeks ago to dovetail with the British Superbike's 2011 programme and Saturday 21 May is the only free weekend during May," added the North West director.

"It is unfortunate that our agreed date clashes with a round of the World Endurance Race in Albacete, Spain.

"Preparations are already in place for number of annual festival events which take place around the North West 200.

"It would therefore be unfair to attempt to change dates during what is already an incredibly busy period for motorbike racing.

"Each year the Coleraine Club aims to attract a top quality line up of teams and competitors to ensure a thrilling and exciting programme of racing and 2011 will be no exception."

The Honda Europe team is completed by eight-time NW200 winner Steve Plater, who has retired from road racing.

The Honda outfit is requesting that the WEC round be moved so the two riders can compete at the North West.

English rider Plater is quitting road racing after a high successful career.

"It was very much a hard decision. You've got to understand that I've no intention of swinging my leg over a bike if it's not capable of giving me a win," the 42-year-old told the News Letter.

"I don't want to be finishing down the results sheets and getting to a point where I call it a day.

"My last results as the Macau Grand Prix were wins, I won and set a new race record (in the Senior) the last time I raced at the TT and my last five races at the North West 200 were all wins, so it's a good time to say goodbye."

Plater plans to stay involved with the North West 200 in an advisory capacity.
