Snetterton track revamp 'radical', says circuit boss

The £2.5m revamp to Snetterton race circuit in Norfolk will be "radical", says circuit manager Jamie Hopper.

Hopper told BBC Look East: "We need to make some changes - we've had the same layout for 30-odd years.

"Radical is the word. Snetterton has got two very long straights and we're going change that with a whole new in-field layout of about a mile.

"It will produce more corners and more overtaking opportunities to give exciting racing," he added.

Hopper says he hopes the track, which hosts British Superbikes and British Touring Cars, will become one of the UK's elite racing venues after the face-lift, which is part of a wider £20m investment in the site that houses it.

"[The revamp] will be to the latest standards and that will make the place a lot more attractive to race teams," he said.

The works, which start on 22 November and are expected to finish in January, will create a new route at the track called Snetterton 300.

The plans have been in the pipeline since 2005, a year after Snetterton was acquired by Motorsport Vision, which also owns Brands Hatch.

The new track's completion date will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the first race on the Norfolk site.

"There's a little bit of trepidation I have to admit, and there's a lot of work to do in the next two or three months," said Hopper.

"We want to start off on the right foot in 2011 and get it right first time, so there's quite a lot of pressure on us to make sure we get it right."
