Plymouth Devils began the defence of their National Trophy title with a shock home defeat by the Isle of Wight.

Only Seemond Stephens (12 points) and Mark Simmonds (10 points) hit double figures for the Devils as the home side struggled against the Islanders.

The visitors were led to victory by their impressive captain Dean Felton, who claimed 13 points.

Ben Hopwood (12 points) and Mark Jones (eight points) were also on form for the Islanders.

Devils rider Jaimie Pickard was taken to hospital with a rib injury after crashing out on his second ride of the evening.

Plymouth: Mark Simmonds 10 (5 rides), Matt Bates 5+2 (4), Paul Starke 7 (4), Lee Smethills 5 (4), Seemond Stephens 12 (5). Reserves: Jaimie Pickard 3 (2), David Gough 1+1 (6).

Isle of Wight: Mark Jones 8 (4), Brendan Johnson (rider replacement), Danny Warwick 6+1 (5), Dean Felton 12+1 (6), Ben Hopwood 12 (6). Reserves: Daniel Hodgson 4+2 (4), Tom Hill 5+2 (5).
