Newson targets F1 Stock Car final

Norfolk Arena officials expect a strong turnout for F1 Stock Cars

Aylsham's Matthew Newson is hoping to make the F1 World Stock Car final in front of a loyal local following.

Newson is in the semi-final which is being held at the Norfolk Arena in King's Lynn on Saturday.

Newson said: "It would mean everything to me and a lot of people, if I could do it for them it would be massive.

"The current champion Stuart Smith has had a superb season since being crowned world champion, it would be nice if the same thing happened to me," he said.

Newson is the only local driver on the grid and has qualified to start from the inside berth on row two, he is on strong form following a fourth-placed finish at last week's European Championship at Northampton.

Defending world champion Smith, from Rochdale, starts in pole position but a 100mph crash in Northampton has left his fitness in doubt.

The drivers are competing for a place in the F1 Stock Car World Final at the Ipwsich Stadium in September.
