Da Matta wins as Wilson retires
Justin Wilson
Wilson could not capitalise on his first ever pole
Cristiano da Matta cruised to victory in the Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland on Sunday as engine trouble forced Britain's Justin Wilson to retire.

Da Matta, the 2002 Champ Car champion, finished 10.128 seconds in front of defending champion Sebastien Bourdais.

Canada's Paul Tracy, who won two weeks ago at Milwaukee, finished third.

Wilson, starting on pole for the first time, had a lead of more than 10 seconds on Tracy before his RuSport car gave up on lap 45 of 105.

Brazil's Da Matta, who left Champ Car for Formula One in 2002 and is now driving for PKV Racing, now has career 12 wins. Meanwhile, Wilson tried to put a positive spin on his weekend, despite his car's failure.

"I don't know what happened. The car just died halfway down the straight," said Wilson.

"The car was fantastic. It was great to drive and the team and the engineers did a good job on it all weekend."
