Hornish edges Delphi Indy 300

Hornish (left) won the closest-ever Indy finish

Sam Hornish Jr edged out Al Unser Jr to win the Delphi Indy 300 on Sunday in the closest finish in the sport's history.

The pair had been locked together for the last 22 laps, shortly ahead of a pursuing nine-car pack at Chicagoland Speedway.

But Hornish held his nerve to win by a mere 0.0024secs.

Buddy Lazier was third while Helio Castroneves finished fourth.

"The fastest way around is to push another car around," said Hornish, who started from pole and led for 102 of the 200 laps.

"But it's really hard to pass when you have to push a car aside.

"Having a guy that's experienced like Al, and all the races I've been in with him and all the respect I have for him, it's just like a high-speed pace lap."

Concussion

Unser said: "That was the closest wheel-to-wheel racing I think you'll see in the country today.

"There are fenders on those cars down south for a reason."

The victory gave Hornish a 12-point lead over Castroneves in the standings, with the series' final race next Sunday at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Gil de Ferran, who began the day only one point behind Castroneves, is all but out of the title race after crashing into the wall on the 52nd lap.

De Ferran sustained concussion and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
