Herbert dreams of Indy 500
Indianapolis 500
The first bend of the Indianapolis 500
Former Formula One driver Johnny Herbert is confident that he will compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24-hour races this year.

Herbert will drive at Le Mans with Bentley in June and has a drive organised for the 500 in May, though not a budget.

He said: "I'll definitely be at Le Mans. I've spoken to Bentley and we had more or less agreed everything, but there were a few other options that came up a week ago."

The three-time Grand Prix winner won the event in 1991 with Mazda.

Oval practise

He said he had always wanted to compete in the Indianapolis 500, which is part of the Indy Racing League season, and was hopeful that he would this year.

"It looks good. I've got a drive if we can get the budget," he said.

Herbert wants to compete in three IRL races before the Indy 500 to get some practise on the oval circuits.

The IRL season opens in Phoenix on 18 March and the Indianapolis 500 is on 27 May.

Le Mans takes place on 16 and 17 June.

Herbert left Formula One after 12 seasons last year and had hoped to compete in CART, the rival series to IRL.

He had talks but could not agree a race deal.

Herbert survived a horrific crash during an F3000 race at Brands Hatch in 1988 and raced in Formula One for Benetton, Lotus, Sauber, Stewart and Jaguar Racing.
