0010 The last event starts first time. USA take first in the 4x100 ahead of surprise package South Africa as Trinidad and Tobago are beaten into third. Brazil dropped the baton.

0002 All set for the grand finale - the men's 4x100m relay: Poland v Ivory Coast v Japan v USA v Trinidad and Tobago v Brazil v Australia v South Africa.

2347 The championships are almost over, with just the 4x100 men's relay remaining.

Britain's games are finished - a haul of two medals is the worst performance at a major championships for a quarter of a century.

2344 Jamaica win from Germany and Russia, with USA recovering to deny Britain fourth place. The British team were fifth.

2343 The USA drop the baton and fall back to fourth. Suzianne Reid was the guilty runner, taking the baton cleanly but then juggling and dropping it. Jamaica now lead Germany.

2342 At halfway stage, the USA lead Jamaica and Germany. Britain in fifth, battling with Russia and France but the medals look decided already.

2340 The penultimate event is the women's 4x400m relay.

Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco

2327 Cloete has won the high jump gold ahead of Babakova in silver - the final field medal in the stadium.

2325 USA win the gold. Jamaica get silver and Bahamas are third. Britain finished sixth.

2324 USA lead with the Bahamas and Jamaica on Angelo Taylor's tail - Britain off the pace.

2323 A poor changeover and Britain fall back to fifth. Bahamas lead from USA, Jamaica and Poland.

2321 Britain are fourth as they break behind USA and Bahamas.

2320 The final of the 4x400m relay. Britain are in lane four next to the USA in five.

2314 Babakova's first attempt at 2.02 is a failure. As is Cloete's and both womens' second tries. If both fail their third attempts the South African wins gold.

Kajsa Bergqvist: Favourite settled for bronze in the high jump
2310 Swedish favourite Kajsa Bergqvist makes a third failure at 2.00 metres to drop out of the high jump. She will take the bronze, with the gold now between Cloete and Babakova.

2308 Hestrie Cloete of South Africa joins Babakova in failing at 2.00.

2306 In the women's high jump, Inha Babakova of Ukraine has cleared 2.00 metres.

2305 Czech Jan Zelezny is confirmed as the javelin gold medallist from Finn Aki Parviainen.

Konstadinós Gatsioúdis of Greece comes third, with no thrower improving in the final two rounds.

2304 El Guerrouj is tiring. The gap is closing. But he hangs to take gold in 3:30.68 seconds.

Kenyan Bernard Lagat is second while Driss Maazouzi of France wins the bronze medal.

2303 At the bell, another 55-second lap (55.66) and El Guerrouj puts clear air between himself and the field.

2302 The second lap is slower (58.28) and El Guerrouj leaves behind pacemaker Kaouch.

2301 The first lap goes past in 55.41 seconds - a fast time.

2300 The men's 1500m final is underway. El Guerrouj goes straight to the front, followed by his pacemaker and team-mate Adil Kaouch.

2257 Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco prepares to defend his world 1500 metres title, hoping to put behind him defeat in Sydney.

2254 In the women's high jump, four women are clear of 1.97 metres: Kajsa Bergqvist, Hestrie Cloete, Inha Babakova and Venelina Veneva.

2251 Zelezny still leads the javelin from Parviainen and Gatsioúdis.

2247 A terrific finish to the women's 800m, with a three-way battle, although it does not involve Britain's Kelly Holmes, who was sixth.

Mozambique's Maria Mutola wins it from Austrian Stephanie Graf and Letitia Vriesde of Surinam. The trio finished within 0.18 seconds of each other.

2245 The start of the 800 metres final for women. The first lap is 59.08 seconds.

2236 Greek javelin thrower Konstadinós Gatsioúdis makes 89.95 with this fourth effort to consolidate third place.

2234 In the women's high jump, European champion Monica Iagar-Dinescu fails to clear 1.94 metres and is out.

2226 Mick Hill makes a second attempt at running up for this third throw, but gives in to his injury and half-heartedly chucks the javelin in disgust. He is out of the second half.

2224 Still no change at the top of the javelin standings. Time now for the second 4x100m semi.

USA win despite their final changeover almost taking place outside the allowed area. Trinidad and Tobago come second, ahead of Poland and Australia.

2214 The first track action. First semi-final of the 4x100m men's relay. Brazil win from Japan, with Ivory Coast and South Africa also qualifying.

2209 Hill attempts a second throw. He deliberately fouls after a disappointing effort. His personal best would only get him up to fifth in what is a high class competition.

2207 Jan Zelezny takes the lead in the javelin with a 92.80 metre throw. Konstadinós Gatsioúdis of Greece is third with 88.39 metres.

2206 Early days in the women's high jump - six women have cleared 1.90 metres.

2153 Mick Hill of Britain - who reckoned he might only throw once due to injury - reaches just 77.81, the worst throw so far.

2151 Aki Parviainen of Finland takes the lead with 91.31 metres - a new championhip record. The Finn used his trademark technique of throwing himself forward as well as the javelin.

Spain's silver medallist with Zegorova but no bronze-winner
2147 Olympic javelin champion Jan Zelezny throws 81.76 metres - not as far as leader Breaux Greer of the USA, who managed 87.00 metres.

2140 Olga Yegorova is booed at the medal ceremony for the women's 5,000 metres. The Russian athlete was reinstated in these finals despite failing a drug test.

The Ethiopian bronze medallist did not attend the ceremony. It is not clear why.

2130 The men's javelin begins alongside the women's high jump. The first track race is not until 2215.
