Christian Malcolm has vowed to bounce back quickly after just missing out on a 200m medal at the World Athletics Championships. The Welshman was one of the favourites for gold in Edmonton but finished in fifth, just two one-hundredths of a second away from a podium place. Olympic champion Konstadinos Kederis came home first, clocking a time of 20.04 secs, with Jamaica's Christopher Williams taking the silver and America's Shawn Crawford and St Kitts' Kim Collins sharing the bronze.
"I am gutted, what can I say. But I am young. I have come here, finished fifth and set four personal bests," said Malcolm. "My body is broken and it is a pity I have not come away with a medal. "Picking myself up? That's not a problem. It might hit me in the morning, but I have a good team around me and my family will help me get over it." When asked if it had been one race too far, Malcolm said: "You cannot say things like that because you go in expecting to win eight races. "I admit I was a bit nervous. This was a world class final and you could not face any better people than I did today.
"It is sod's law that they handed out two bronze medals and I missed out by one place. "Kederis is good, but the time will come when I beat him, I am confident of that." Malcolm now wants to make up for his 200m disappointment by winning the 4x100m relay. "The incentive to win the relay was there before tonight. We have all come here to run well," he said. "Mark Lewis-Francis set a world junior record and had it taken away from him, and Dwain Chambers was unfortunate not to win a medal in the 100m. "Now this has happened to me, so we hope to set things right in the relay." Britain's second finalist in the 200m, Marlon Devonish, crossed the line in eighth place in 20.38secs - just behind the pack.
