Raymond and Stubbs claim doubles crown

Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, the world's best women's doubles outfit, at last claimed the Wimbledon crown on Sunday.

The top seeds came through against Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama in straight sets.

American Raymond and Australian Stubbs secured a 6-4 6-3 triumph over the ninth seeds.

Defeat brought more disappointment for Japan's Sugiyama, who partnered Frenchwoman Julie Halard-Decugis in last year's final loss against the Williams sisters.

It was the second Grand Slam title for the pairing following their victory in the 2000 Australian Open.

Number one in the world

This was their fifth outing at Wimbledon, and their previous best at the All England Club were semi-final finishes in 1998 and 2000.

After wins in Tokyo on carpet, Scottsdale on hard court, Charleston on clay and Eastbourne on grass, this was their fifth title of the season.

Clijsters and Sugiyama had conceded just one set on their way to the final when they faced Jelena Dokic and Conchita Martinez in the third round.

While Clijsters is now a successful player in singles, her partner is not so well known.

Sugiyama is, however, the world's top ranked player in doubles.
