Sorenstam wins Canadian Open
It was Sorenstam's 29th LPGA Tour victory
Annika Sorenstam secured her sixth title of the year with a two-stroke victory in the Canadian Women's Open.
The Swede shot a three-under-par 69 to finish on 16-under-par, ahead of Kelly Robbins. South Korea's Se Ri Pak and Canadian Lorie Kane tied for third place on 12-under. Sorenstam, who had shot a course record 64 in the third round, started strongly with birdies at the 1st, 5th and 9th holes. Robbins, who teed off at the 1st hole level with Sorenstam, did not cope as well as her rival in the wet conditions. Sorenstam increased her lead with a 30-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole and picked up another stroke at the 14th.
Ahead by seven strokes with four holes to play, the 30-year-old bogeyed the final two holes to end a run of 48 holes without dropping a shot. In contrast, Robbins holed a 60-foot birdie putt at the 15th and also birdied the final two holes.
"At the end, I probably played too conservatively," Sorenstam admitted. "I wanted to get off to a good start. I did and I just tried to keep it going." Play had begun three hours early because rain had been forecast. Even so, the leading players' rounds were interrupted for 90 minutes because of a downpour. Sorenstam's 29th LPGA Tour victory stretched her lead over Pak in the player of the year race to 70 points.
