Sorenstam shares the lead
Sorenstam celebrates her record round with her caddy
Annika Sorenstam shot a course record eight-under-par 64 to join Kelly Robbins at the top of the Canadian Women's Open leaderboard.
The Swede, who began play five strokes behind Robbins and Rosie Jones, hit all 18 greens in regulation in her bogey-free round to match Robbins at 13-under, for a 203 total, on Angus Glen's South Course. Sorenstam said: "I'll take 18 birdie chances any day. I'm very pleased with my round, and actually let a few chances go by." The Swede just missed an 11ft eagle putt on the par-five 16th, and also failed to convert five birdie opportunities inside eight feet.
She added: "I haven't won in a while, so I'm a little hungry."
Robbins, winless since the season-opening event in 1999, bogeyed the final two holes for her second straight 69. She hit into greenside bunkers on both holes. She said: "I felt a little tired out there and it caught up with me on 17 and 18. I'm glad I didn't have any more holes to play. But I'm looking forward to Sunday." Jones, a two-time winner this year at age 41, shot a 71 to drop two strokes back. She double-bogeyed the par-five 16th after hitting the lip of a greenside bunker with her third shot. Tammie Green matched Sorenstam with a 64 to join Canadian Lorie Kane at 10-under. Green, the 1989 du Maurier Classic winner in Quebec, birdied all four par-fives and saved par on the 18th after driving into the tall grass in the left-side hazard. Pak fades Kane, trying to become the second Canadian to win a LPGA Tour event in Canada, shot a 68. Jill McGill also shot a 64 to match Sweden's Maria Hjorth (69) at nine-under. McGill reeled off seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch in the middle of the round. South Korea's Se Ri Pak was eight-under after a 71. The British Open winner opened with a 65 for a share of the first-round lead, but faded to a 72 on Friday. Karrie Webb was three-under after a 67. The Australian star made the cut by a stroke on Friday after rounds of 71 and 75.
