European challenge falters
Jose Maria Olazabal at the 2001 USPGA
Olazabal is not confident of Ryder Cup qualification
The European challenge faltered on 'moving' Saturday at the USPGA Championship in Atlanta.

On the day that would-be champions are supposed to lift themselves into a good position at the top of the leader board, no European golfer made a decisive move.

But a few were still in with a chance of a high Sunday finish.

Lee Westwood eagled the par-five 12th hole and, although he gave the shots back with a double-bogey at the 15th, he shot a two-under 68 to stand at three-under-par overall.

The Briton ran off three birdies in a row from the eighth and said afterwards: "Today was my worst swing, but my best putting."

"I hit some great shots out there and some undescribable ones.

"On the double at 15, I just came off of it - I got kind of got trapped and it (the ball) went into the water."

Jose Maria Olazabal matched his round on the penultimate day of the last Major of the year.

The Spaniard shot 68 but was less than happy after dropping shots at 16 and 17.

"I'm really disappointed to be honest," said Olazabal, who lies at one-under-par for the championship.

I think Sam [Torrance] already has his picks in his mind

"I hit every fairway today. That was one of the priorities this week."

Asked about his Ryder Cup prospects, the double Masters champion said: "I don't think I'm going to make the team.

"I think Sam [Torrance] already has his picks in his mind," he said.

But Olazabal may be helped by the form of Jesper Parnevik, who is widely touted to be one of those wild card picks should he fail to qualify automatically.

Monty misfires

The Swede fired a level-par 70 on Saturday to remain at two-under-par overall and could pick up valuable Ryder Cup points with a good final round.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie slipped off the pace, with a 74 in his third round and is four-over for the championship.

He is joined by Welshman Ian Woosnam, who fired a three-over-par 73 on Saturday.

Andrew Coltart, of Scotland, sits at level par overall, after a 71, and has the opportunity to place well on the final day.

Nick Faldo hit the 10th hole-in-one of his career, but had to settle for a one-over-par 71 and is two-over on aggregate.
