Upbeat Monty talks up outside chance
Colin Montgomerie
Montgomerie recovered in the second half of his round
Colin Montgomerie played his second nine holes in 31 just to get to level par and make the cut at Atlanta Athletic Club on Friday.

Three bogies in the first seven holes left the Scot with it all to do, but a one-under-par round of 69 left him in an upbeat mood.

"That was a good effort," Montgomerie said.

That was comfortably my best round of the year - but I need a few hours on the putting green
Lee Westwood

"I had a lot of work to do and I did it. I started driving the ball better and gave myself a chance.

"That's possibly my most courageous nine holes of the year and I don't think I'm too far back to win."

Lee Westwood was similarly cheerful on one-under after a 68 which he described as "comfortably my best round of the year".

Westwood, moving from one over, said: "I only missed two greens and was mostly hitting it into the five to 10 feet range. I need a few hours on the putting green, though."

Welshman Phil Price, in the hot seat of the 10th and last automatic spot in the Ryder Cup table, added a 69 to his opening 68 to stand a useful three-under at the end of day two.

Ian Woosnam
Woosnam was made to sweat but made the cut

While Andrew Oldcorn battled back with a 67 that left him on a level-par 140.

Andrew Coltart was playing alongside his brother-in-law Westwood and was disappointed with his round of 72 following a 67 on Thursday.

Ian Woosnam, meanwhile, was made to sweat - in every sense.

No fan of heat and humidity, the Welshman chipped in at the last for a 70 and at one over had to wait to see if it was good enough to make the cut.

It was, but only right at the end of the day when Olin Browne, needing a birdie to knock out all those on one-over, dropped a shot instead.

Among the Europeans to miss the cut were Darren Clarke, on two-over, and Sergio Garcia and Paul Lawrie, on three over.

Padraig Harrington, Gary Orr and Ian Poulter were also left to pack their bags and head for home.
