USPGA first round Tiger Watch
All the hole-by-hole action as Tiger Woods opens his defence of the USPGA crown with a three-over-par 73 at the Athletic Club course in Atlanta.
A shaky start for the defending champion as he aims for a third successive Wanamaker Trophy. Woods, who starts his round on the 10th hole - with a large field divided into two starting groups - drops a shot with a bogey five. He pulls his opening drive into a bunker and misses the green with his next. He then sees his chip roll eight feet past and misses his par putt.
Playing partners David Duval and Retief Goosen open with a birdie and a par four respectively
Tiger gets back on track with a straightforward par at the 454-yard 11th hole.
Duval moves onto two-under-par with a second birdie, while Goosen again pars.
Woods moves back to level par, when he uses his driving ability to optimum effect to pick up a birdie four on the 547-yard par five 12th hole. He taps in a simple putt after missing a 10-foot eagle chance.
Playing partner Duval birdies his third hole in a row to move into a share of the lead, while Goosen makes it a clean sweep of fours to move to one-under-par.
Woods has to settle for a par at the 13th hole - having started his round at the 10th. Duval hits his first par but Goosen birdies to move to two-under-par. Level
Woods again shows that he is not in peak form as he bogeys the tricky par-four 14th hole. He is now 54th out of 75 players, five shots off the field.
Playing partners Duval and Goosen both par the hole to stay three-under-par and two-under-par respectively.
Things go from bad to terrible for the defending champion at the nasty 277-yard 15th. His second shot to this long par three hole finds the water on the right and he slumps to a calamitous double-bogey. Woods is now eight shots behind the leader Ernie Els.
Goosen drops a shot to fall back to one-under-par while Duval pars.
Woods steadies his round with a par four at the 16th hole, but he really needs a birdie to revive his hopes.
Goosen improves to two-under-par with a birdie while Duval drops his first shot of the day.
Woods safely negotiates the short, but testing, 17th with a par three.
Goosen grabs a birdie to move to three under, a shot ahead of Duval, who cards a three.
Woods does well not to drop another stroke on the 490-yard par four last, after hooking his second horribly, flirting with the water and finding sand. He saves par - but it will do little to improve his mood as he has reached the turn in three-over 38. By his own amazing standards this is an awful score - and there are only three players below him on the leaderboard.
Duval and Goosen are still well placed after par fours.
The split tee-off system means Woods reaches the first hole having already played nine. He cards a four to ensure there is no further damage at the start of the back nine.
Duval also claims a par - but Goosen, the third member of their illustrious three-ball, snags another biride to move to four under, just one shot behind leader Carlos Franco.
At last a birdie - the first since the third hole of his round. A 20-foot uphill putt sinks for a three that moves Woods closer to the rest of the field.
But he is still way behind his playing partners, Duval and Goosen. They are now side-by-side on three under, after Duval birdies and Goosen drops a shot.
Just when his challenge looks back on track, Woods suffers another major blow as a six takes him back to four over. He three putts from 10 feet as his normally deadly putting game deserts him. It is his second double-bogey of the round.
Goosen also slips up, with a five, but Duval secures a par.
Woods collects a par three on this, the fourth hole on the Atlanta Athletic Club course.
Goosen picks up a shot to move to three under, alongside Duval - who misses a good birdie chance.
A birdie four for the defending champion as he moves back to within eight shots of the leaders.
Duval birdies to join a group of players in joint second place on four under, but Goosen follows his birdie with a double-bogey seven to slump to one under.
He leaves a 25-yard birdie putt just a couple of feet short and has to settle for a par four. Three over
Woods makes the most of the shortest hole on the course, the 183-yard seventh. He sends a fine tee shot to within 20 feet of the pin and then holes his birdie putt for a two. Two over
His tee shot on the 463-yard 17th drifts into the rough off to the right. He leaves his second short of the green and then his chip onto the putting surface pulls up well short of the hole. But, with his back to the wall, he secures par with a superb 20-foot putt. Two over
Woods takes a driver out of his bag for the 416-yard ninth, which is his last hole of the day. His huge tee shot bounds up the fairway, leaving him just a wedge into the green. But he sends the 20-foot birdie putt past the hole and then misses a tricky four-footer for par. The hot pre-championship favourite finally taps in for a dismal bogey and a three-over-par round of 73.
David Duval collects par for 66 - and a share of the clubhouse lead - and the third member of the group, Retief Goosen, also manages a four for 69.
