Top seeds take doubles title
"It's just surreal" said Stubbs
L Raymond (US) & R Stubbs (Aus) (1) beat K Po-Messerli (US) & N Tauziat (Fra) (4) 6-2 5-7 7-5
Top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs won a gruelling women's doubles final to add the US Open title to their Wimbledon crown. The pair triumphed over the fourth seeded pair of Kimberly Po-Messerli of the US and Nathalie Tauziat. "Winning Wimbledon was a dream come true and now winning the US Open... it's just surreal," said Australian Stubbs.
It was also a moment of personal glory for Stubbs who won the mixed doubles title with countryman Todd Woodbridge, ironically against American Raymond and Leander Paes of India. "After winning the mixed I really wanted to come out here and try to play my best for my partner. I beat her in the mixed finals so I felt like I had to owe her one," joked Stubbs. The pair had their hands full with Tauziat and Po-Messerli, narrowly avoiding a third-set tiebreak with a service break in the final game. The defeat was a crushing blow for their opponents, especially Tauziat, who was in tears after the match. The 33-year-old has announced she will retire at the end of the year and was playing her final Grand Slam match. "It's a shame that Nathalie's ending her career this year because she's still an unbelievably good tennis player and we're really going to miss her out here," Stubbs said.
