Jennifer Capriati keeps her eyes on the US Open
Jennifer Captriati (US) bt Amelie Mauresmo (Fra) 6-3 6-4

American Jennifer Capriati crushed Amelie Mauresmo of France in straight sets to reach the US Open semi-final for only the second time in her career.

The American number two seed last reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows 10 years ago.

Capriati, who is also the 1992 Olympic champion, will meet Venus Williams in the last four.

"I've graduated to being, you know, just a well-rounded tennis player...in all areas of the game," Capriati said after the match.

"She made a lot of mistakes. I think it's because I was keeping the pressure on. That was my intention," Capriati added.

Both players produced high quality tennis and traded fierce exchanges from the baseline with some fluent stroke play.

Capriati bombardment

Mauresmo had two break points on Capriati's opening service game, but the American recovered to hold her serve.

While Mauresmo was left to rue that missed opportunity, Capriati stormed away to take the opening set.

In the seventh game she broke the Frenchwoman's serve despite Mauresmo serving at speeds in excess of 100mph.

Capriati, who is the holder of the Australian and French Opens, then clinched the first set by breaking Mauresmo's serve for a second time.

Yet the Frenchwoman, ranked number eight, never gave up under the Capriati bombardment.

No more so than in the second set's second game when Mauresmo did well to hold her serve when Capriati had two break points.

But the Frenchwoman, undid all that work when, trailing 4-5 in the second set, she made a series of unforced errors on her service game.

Mauresmo saved the first match point, but Capriati made no mistake on the second to claim her place in the semi-finals.

She now faces Venus Williams and is looking forward to it.

"I think that's what we live for - just to get in that moment and really have a challenge," said Capriati.
