Williams beats Davenport in classic
Williams now faces Hingis in the semi-final
Williams now faces Hingis in the semi-final
S Williams [10] (US) bt L Davenport (US) 6-3 6-7 (7-9) 7-5

Serena Williams set up a semi-final showdown against Martina Hingis with an epic victory over Lindsay Davenport.

Both players performed to the best of their ability as match swung one way and then the other.

Williams demonstrated her immense power, but also accuracy, as she took the first set 6-3.

The set turned in the seventh game when Davenport wasted a break point against the Williams serve.

Classic tie-break

Williams held for 4-3 and then broke Davenport in the very next game when a lucky net cord went her way.

The 10th seed served out for the set and looked as if she may run away with the match when she broke Davenport immediately in the second set.

The third seed was wobbling, but held her game together, and Williams let her back into the match with a poor service game when leading the second set 3-2.

Davenport earned two break points, and Williams handed her the break with a double fault.

The ascendancy was now with Davenport, but Williams dug deep and took the set to a tie-break.

The tie-break was a classic with both players opening up with forehand winners to begin.

Epic encounter

Davenport seemed to have handed her opponent victory when she double-faulted at 4-4.

But she fought back and survived two match points to take the breaker 9-7.

Davenport again found herself a break down in the third set as Williams came out firing at the start of the set.

The third seed broke back in the fifth game only to lose her own service in the very next game.

But she broke back once more for 4-3 having been 40-0 down on the Williams serve.

With the match seemingly heading for a last-set tie-break, Williams added a final twist by breaking Davenport at 6-5.

A cross-court forehand proved too strong as Williams won an epic encounter.

"I really, really wanted to win this match," said Williams afterwards. "Everyone points out the close matches I lost.

"You let that go. You really do, or else you are going to be in a hole forever.

"I'm really not trying to be in a hole forever."
