Jennifer Capriati moved closer to her third Grand Slam of the year as she swept past Austrian Barbara Schett 6-3 6-3 and into the US Open quarter-finals.

Capriati will meet Amelie Mauresmo and Nathalie Tauziat in three sets.

Elsewhere, Belgian Kim Clijsters defeated 11th seed Russian Elena Dementieva in three sets.

I'm not going to tell you what I did there

Capriati, who resurrected her career in 2001 with back-to-back French and Australian Open wins, survived some nervous early moments to power to victory.

Schett had four break points on Capriati's opening service game, but all were spurned.

She also failed to capitalise on another two break points in the fifth game.

Capriati broke in the eighth game, and went on to take the first set 6-3.

I feel I'm getting better and peaking as each match goes on.

Normal service resumed in the second set as Capriati established a dominance which left Schett, at times, bewildered.

Her powerful forehands at the baseline and volleys at the net upset the rhythm of the 19th seed.

The crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium came alive when the American had two match points in the seventh game at 5-2 but spurned her chance, playing a double fault and a lazy backhand before finally being broken.

But Schett was not in the right frame of mind to make a comeback and succumbed too easily to hand the American an easy win.

Kim Clijsters faced a stiffer test in her match Elena Dementieva. The fifth seed made 42 unforced errors in the first two sets, but fought back well after losing the second to win 7-5 4-6 6-2..

Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo made an awesome start to her match, winning the first set 6-0 at the expense of Nathalie Tauziat.

She lost the second set on a tie break before bouncing back to clinch the decider 6-3.

Venus Williams sent out a warning to her rivals with an accomplished performance against Sandrine Testud.

The reigning champion found herself 4-2 down after a sluggish start, but then reeled off 10 straight games for a 6-4 6-0 win.

Fourth round:

Kim Clijsters [5] (Bel) bt Elena Dementieva [11] (Rus) 7-5 4-6 6-2
