Fifth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero has been sent tumbling out of the US Open by fellow Spaniard Tommy Rebredo.

Rebredo, 19, triumphed 7-6 4-6 6-4 4-6 7-6 to set up a fourth round clash against American Andy Roddick.

Ranked 39th in the world, Rebredo stunned the French Open semi-finalist in the decisive fifth set tie-break.

Ferrero hit four consecutive errors in the shoot-out to trail 5-1. He never recovered as the teenager claimed the biggest scalp of the tournament so far.

Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic
Ivanisevic ponders defeat
Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, the 15th seed, accompanied Ferrero out of the tournament after he lost to unseeded Spaniard Albert Costa 6-4 7-6 7-6.

The 29-year-old Ivanisevic, who registered a remarkable victory at Wimbledon as a wild card, had won his first two matches at Flushing Meadows in straight sets.

Costa will meet the winner of the match between world number one and top seed Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil and Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

Seventh seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov overcame a poor start to secure a fourth round place with victory over Argentina's David Nalbandian.

The Russian, who has only made it past the last 16 once at Flushing Meadows, lost the opening set but regained his composure to earn a 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-2 win.

Kafelnikov meets France's Arnaud Clement next after the 12th seed had a convincing win over 17th seed Carlos Moya of Spain.

Clement recovered from losing the tie-break in the first set to produce some of his best tennis for a 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-0 victory.

Earlier, Andy Roddick powered past 11th seed Alex Corretja 6-4 6-2 6-2.

Roddick, who has only just turned 19, hit 16 aces, with one serve measured at 138 miles (222.1 km) per hour.

The 18th-ranked Roddick made fewer unforced errors - 16 - than Corretja - 31 - who reached his second career French Open final in May.

This is the first time that Roddick has reached a Grand Slam fourth round, where he will meet Tommy Rebredo who beat fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 4-6 6-4 4-6 7-6.

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt
Race row surrounding Hewitt recedes

Fourth seed Lleyton Hewitt made light work of Spain's Albert Portas as the Australian advanced into the fourth round of the US Open.

Hewitt's 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory was secured in 108 minutes.

After the race row that followed Hewitt's win over James Blake, there was little hostility from the capacity crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Hewitt will next face Germany's 16th-seeded Tommy Haas, who defeated Czech Jiri Novak 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Playing on the Grandstand court, Haas, winner of the Hamlet Cup where he beat Pete Sampras the final the week before the Open, needed just 99 minutes for victory.

His win equalled his best US Open showing in 1999.

Haas, who had not been past the second round in the first three major championships this year, smashed 14 aces and compiled 43 winners and was dominant throughout.
