Pete Sampras continued his Grand Slam revival with a resounding straight sets victory over Mikhail Youzhny in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.

Sampras, who is looking to win his first tournament for 14 months, saw off his Russian opponent 6-3 6-2 6-2.

The American is only seeded 10th in Flushing Meadows - despite winning more Grand Slam titles than any player in the history of the sport.

But the ease of his victory over world number 65 Youzhny showed he has regained form since his shock Wimbledon exit at the hands of Roger Federer.

Sampras cruised through in 89 minutes, firing 10 aces. He hit 36 winners and suffered 18 unforced errors.

"I feel like I'm playing fine. I'm hitting the ball well, moving well," Sampras said. "The year has been a little disappointing.

"I haven't been playing all that well. But I'm showing what I can do out there.

Sixth seed Patrick Rafter will meet Sampras in a fascinating fourth round clash after cruising past Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti.

The Australian was made to work hard in the first set before securing a 7-6 (7/3) 6-2 6-2 victory.

Rafter was kept on court for two hours and three minutes in his second consecutive night match.

He will need to recuperate if he is to make progress through the half of the draw that also includes Andre Agassi.

Defending champion Marat Safin need two hours and 31 minutes to complete a straight-sets victory over Moroccan Hicham Arazi.

The Russian hit 12 aces as he dominated the match with his serve, as well as making 40 outright winners off the ground on his way to a 7-5 6-4 7-6 (7-5) win.

Safin will now meet 14th seed seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden in the last 16.

Andre Agassi celebrates
Agassi will face Federer in the fourth round
Andre Agassi showed impressive form with a 7-5 7-6 6-3 victory over Ramon Delgado of Paraguay.

Agassi needed only one hour and 58 minutes to defeat the 24-year-old qualifier.

Delgado broke Agassi's serve three times but the Australian Open winner crucially converted five out five break points in response.

The second seed will face Switzerland's Roger Federer in the fourth round.

Federer, Sampras's conqueror at Wimbledon, defeated Sjeng Schalken 6-4 7-6 7-6.

The match was closer than the scoreline might suggest, but Federer's impressive serving proved crucial.
