Defending champion Venus Williams cruised into the US Open fourth round with a 6-3 6-4 win over Lisa Raymond.

Williams completed the win in 62 minutes despite struggling with her serve.

The number four seed hit seven double faults and put only 52% of her first serves into play.

But she excelled with her ground strokes and converted eight out of nine break points.

Williams said: "I just didn't serve as well as I wanted to. I hope I do better in the next match.

"It seems like I can pull my serve together or pull my serve out when I need to. I'm pretty confident with my serve and what I can do with it.

"I never play as well as I want to in the early rounds but I get better in the later rounds."

Williams play the number 18 seed Sandrine Testud of France in the next round.

Kim Clijsters celebrates her win
Clijsters has yet to drop a set
She defeated Slovenia's Maja Matevzic 6-2 6-0.

Matevzic, 21, ranked 105, upset 16th seed Silvia Farina Elia, of Italy, in the first round.

Number two seed Jennifer Capriati advanced to the fourth round with a 6-4 6-4 win over Spain's Virginia Ruano-Pascual.

The French and Australian Open champion needed one hour and 24 minutes to triumph as she hit seven double faults and 34 unforced errors.

Capriati will meet 19th seed Barbara Schett of Austria in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Belgium's Kim Clijsters defeated Slovakia's Henrieta Nagyova 6-3 7-5.

The 18-year-old set up match point with her fifth ace before disposing of her opponent after 71 minutes.

Clijsters had beaten the 23rd-ranked Nagyova in their only previous meeting when she claimed a three-set victory in the fourth round on her way to the final of the French Open.

France's Amelie Mauresmo, seeded eight, battled past American Chanda Rubin, 7-5 7-5.

Neither player was particularly sharp but Mauresmo proved too powerful from the baseline as she hammered 36 winners to 15 for Rubin in the 89-minute match.

Mauresmo, who converted just four of 14 break point chances, made 30 unforced errors in the match, one more than the 25-year-old Rubin, who is ranked 30th in the world.

Russia's Elena Dementieva hit her way past Anke Huber 6-3 7-5.

The 19-year-old, a surprise semi-finalist last year and seeded 11th at this year's US Open, proved steadier than the 17th-seeded German in the 70-minute clash.

Huber made 39 unforced errors and put only 59% of her first serves into play.
