Defending champion Venus Williams had little trouble booking a third round place at the US Open with a 6-2 6-2 win over fellow American Meilen Tu.

Williams lost serve three times but still needed just 62 minutes to make it through and she now faces cojmpatriot and 30th seed Lisa in the next round.

"I definitely think if I play my best, I have a wonderful shot at winning the tournament," said Williams. "But, you know, I don't always play my best.

"As long as I'm playing those important points correctly, that's what counts. So I'm looking forward to just improving in every round."

Jennifer Capriati made light work of beating Australia's Evie Dominikovic to book a place in the third round of the US Open.

The second seeded American won in straight sets, 6-2 6-0, on the Arthur Ashe court at Flushing Meadows.

"At the Grand Slams I want to play my best tennis so I get fired up, and since the French I haven't won a tournament, so I'm eager now," Capriati said after her 51-minute workout.

Capriati, who has lost just five games in her first two matches in New York, now meets Virginia Ruano-Pascual.

The Spaniard, who beat Martina Hingis in the first round at Wimbledon, beat Austria's Evelyn Fauth 5-7 6-2 6-4.

Elsewhere on the fourth day of the championships Kim Clijsters had little trouble negotiating the challenge of wild card Allison Bradshaw to claim a place in the third round of the US Open.

The French Open runner-up and number five seed took only 45 minutes to record a 6-3 6-2 win as her opponent produced five double faults and 28 unforced errors.

Bradshaw, ranked 115 in the world, looked out of her depth against the 18-year-old Belgian, who claimed to be only 75% fit.

Clijsters will face Slovakian 25th seed Henrieta Nagyova who beat France's Nathalie Dechy.

Nagyova had little trouble as she eased to a 6-2 6-1 victory.

But one seed who did not make the third round was Magdalena Maleeva.

The Bulgarian 15th seed was upset 6-3 3-6 6-3 by Australian Alicia Molik.

It equalled Molik's best showing in a Grand Slam, and next up she will face the 19th seed Barbara Schett, who beat Tunisian Selima Sfar in two tight sets 6-4 7-6.
