Laura Davies was awarded the MBE in 1999

Coventry born Laura Davies is arguably Britain's most outstanding female golfer.

She began playing amateur golf in 1970 and turned professional in 1985.

She is renowned for being very talented with not too much practice, and has a tendency to turn up at tournaments, having not played any practice rounds and subsequently winning!

In her sixteen years as a professional golfer, she has won tournaments all over the world, including four majors.

In 1994 she became the first European player to be ranked number one.

Her biggest purse of $340,000 was in 1996, the year that she was named the US Player of the Year.

During her playing career she has achieved a massive four hole-in-ones.

In 1998 Laura was awarded an MBE, and in 1999 was awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours list.

She joined the BBC in the summer of 2001 and will commentate on The Open.

Laura now lives in West Byfleet, England
