Maggert's albatross joy
Jeff Maggert at The Open
Maggert endured a day of mixed fortunes
American Jeff Maggert joined an elite band of players to have made an albatross two at The Open.

Maggert, who is also one of three players to have achieved the feat at the Masters, holed his 212-yard six-iron second shot to the 494-yard sixth at Royal Lytham on the opening day.

That shot helped him leap from one under to four under and into second place, two behind Colin Montgomerie.

However, he followed it with a bogey six and finished with a 72.

"It was one good shot, but there were a lot of bad ones," said Maggert.

Maggert's magical moment comes almost 12 months after that of South African Manny Zerman's, who made a two at St Andrews' 568-yard fifth.

Prior to Zerman, Bill Rogers had an albatross at Birkdale in 1983 and Johnny Miller at Muirfield in 1980.
