Frankie Dettori is that rare thing in horse racing - a real superstar.

The Italian-born jockey's ability in the saddle, cheeky good humour, immaculate dress sense and spectacular flying dismounts have made him a household name.

But he really captured the attention of people all over the world by riding every winner on a seven-race card at Ascot on 28 September, 1996.

His magnificent seven cleaned out the bookies, and even halted BBC Grandstand's Final score as the cameras showed live coverage of his success.

Little wonder then that punters latch on to Dettori's horses - the so-called Frankie Factor.

But there is one big gap in Dettori's race-winning CV.

He has never taken the Derby at Epsom, although did ride Tobougg to third in this year's renewal.

Dettori missed last year's running of the Classic as he recovered from injuries sustained in a plane crash which claimed the life of the pilot.

But the smartly-dressed Dettori, walking on crutches, did make an appearance at Royal Ascot as a spectator.

He has returned to the saddle, but suffered heartache earlier this year when his stable's retired star Dubai Millennium died at stud.

Dettori boasts an impressive Royal Ascot record, with a total of 23 wins from 1990 to 1999.
