Samaranch's son will join him at the IOC
Juan Antonio Samaranch may have stepped down as president of the IOC - but his son will be carrying on the family name.

Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior, who was nominated for election by his father, was elected to the IOC by a majority of 71-27.

His father kissed him on both cheeks and briefly squeezed his arm during the formal swearing-in ceremony for new members.

Samaranch Jr., a 41-year-old Madrid-based businessman known as 'Juanito' to friends, is vice president of the international modern pentathlon federation.

Big risk

His nomination provoked accusations of nepotism - especially as he will now work alongside his father, who stays in at the IOC in an honorary capacity.

"I think the president took a big risk," said IOC executive committee member Anita DeFranz, one of the defeated candidates for the IOC presidency.

Marc Hodler, the Swiss member who first blew the whistle on the Salt Lake City scandal, merely raised his eyebrows when asked about the message the election of Samaranch Jr. would send to the outside world.

"I'm very, very fond of Juan Antonio Jr.," he said. "He's a wonderful man. But...".
