BBC snaps up MacArthur
Ellen MacArthur celebrates her finish in the Vendee Globe round the world race
"Wonderful opportunity to share my passion"
BBC Sport Online has signed an exclusive contract with Ellen MacArthur which will allow us to bring you unrivalled coverage of her racing season.

Ellen sets sail on Saturday in her first offshore race since she became the youngest person to sail round the world in the Vendée Globe.

And BBC Sport Online will be following her progress over all 3,000 miles of this tricky voyage to the Azores and back.

I hope that people from all walks of life will be touched by the passion and excitement of the sport, and through BBC Sport Online experience the extraordinary highs and lows of sailing

We will be featuring regular interviews with Ellen including a live webcast from the quayside in Cherbourg at 1600 BST on Friday 11 May.

She said: "I see this relationship with BBC Sport as a wonderful opportunity to share my passion for sailing with a wider audience.

"I hope that people from all walks of life will be touched by the passion and excitement of the sport, and through BBC Sport Online experience the extraordinary highs and lows of sailing."

Ellen will be sending back daily diaries of her experiences on board Foncia, a 60ft trimaran skippered by Frenchman Alain Gautier.

You can also check out the latest positions of all eight competitors and read expert analysis of the race by BBC sailing commentator Richard Simmonds.

Able to travel at up to 30 knots, trimaran racing is the cutting edge of offshore sailing - a challenge Ellen is determined to master following her success in Kingfisher.

Andrew Thompson, Head of New Media, Sports News and Development, BBC Sport, said: "Ellen is truly one of the great ambassadors in the world of sport and I am delighted to welcome her to BBC Sport's pool of exceptional talent."

BBC Sport Online will follow Ellen throughout the season, which includes rejoining Kingfisher in July for the EDS Atlantic Challenge.

It culminates in November when she and Gautier set sail in the Jaques Vabre, one of the toughest double-handed transatlantic races in the sailing calendar.
