Gazza's goal 'best ever'
Gascoigne celebrates the goal with Teddy Sheringham

Paul Gascoigne has been voted the scorer of the greatest-ever goal at Wembley.

According to a poll to find the best strike in the 77-year history of the stadium, nearly 29 per cent voted Gascoigne's stunning effort against Scotland in Euro 96 as the winner.

And in the survey conducted by England team sponsors Nationwide, the Everton midfielder also claimed fifth spot for his 30-yard free-kick for Tottenham against Arsenal in their 1991 FA Cup semi-final under the Twin Towers.

Second place went to another Tottenham legend Ricky Villa for his incredible dribble through the Manchester City defence in 1981 while Sir Geoff Hurst was voted third for his hat-trick goal in the 1966 World Cup final.

Gascoigne has not been part of the England squad for over two years, but his past efforts have clearly not been forgotten.

His goal four years ago came when he lobbed the ball over Colin Hendry before volleying it past Andy Goram to give England a 2-0 win in the group game.

England then went on to reach the semi-finals, where they lost to Germany on penalties.

England play Germany again this Saturday, in their first 2002 World Cup qualifying match, and Nationwide spokesman Peter Gandolfi said: "This is a very special week for football and supporters around the world with Wembley hosting its final match.

"We have conducted a poll for the greatest goal at Wembley which has stimulated great debate around the country over the past month.

Staggering

"In all honesty the response has been staggering and illustrates the level of passion football supporters have for Wembley Stadium and the memories it holds."

The top five in the poll were:

1) Paul Gascoigne (v Scotland, 1996) - 28.8%

2) Ricky Villa (v Man City, 1981) - 23.6%

3) Geoff Hurst (v West Germany, 1966) - 23%

4) Bobby Charlton (v Mexico, 1966) - 5.9%

5) Paul Gascoigne (v Arsenal, 1991) - 4.8%
