Lindsay Davenport (US) beat Serena Williams (US) 6-4 6-2

Lindsay Davenport has beaten reigning US Open champion Serena Williams in an awesome display of power.

Davenport blitzed Williams 6-4 6-2 in the quarter-finals of this year's competition at Flushing Meadows.

Davenport struggled to get into the match and had a fight to hold on to her first service game.

But she weathered the severe Williams' early pressure to take the first set.

It was all one-way traffic in the second set with Davenport racing into a seemingly unassailable lead.

Williams was not going to let her crown go easy and managed to save five match points in the seventh game.

Dethroned

But it was all in vain as Davenport kept her composure to serve out the match.

It was the first time in five meetings that Davenport had beaten the younger Williams sister.

A year after Williams had dethroned the 1998 champion in the semi-finals, Davenport returned the favour with a very impressive victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

The number two seed now sets up a semi-final clash with Russia's Elena Dementieva.

Davenport said after the match: "Last year I lost a close match to Serena and a couple of weeks ago in L.A., so I'm glad I was able to turn the tide and I just want to keep going now.

"You got to hold your serve and I was able to do that.

"I didn't have a very high first serve percentage (48) but I was able to get it done."
