Dementieva shocks Huber

Russian youngster Elena Dementieva kept her cool to knock 10th-seeded Anke Huber out of the US Open quarter-finals.

The 18-year-old, who had never been past the third round of a Grand Slam before her current run, coped better with the wind-swept conditions at the Arthur Ashe stadium.

Dementieva, ranked 25, was the only unseeded player to reach the last eight.

But Huber, playing her 11th successive US Open, knows she squandered a golden opportunity to reach the final four at Flushing Meadows for the first time.

I guess I should have won, but she is a very tough player

"It was a great chance to make it to the semis. I should have taken it," lamented the 25-year-old former Australian Open runner-up.

Huber had advanced to the quarter-finals when fourth-seeded French Open champion Mary Pierce retired after the first set of their fourth-round match.

Dementieva said the magnitude of the occasion did not rattle her, but she was somewhat awed by the surroundings.

"I didn't have a practice in this stadium. It's the biggest stadium I ever played in, but I was nervous just in the beginning," she said.

In Friday's semi-finals, Dementieva will face second seed and 1998 Open winner Lindsay Davenport.

Dementieva swept through the first set in 18 minutes before Huber raised her game and battled back, breaking the Russian three times in an error-filled second set.

Huber broke Dementieva yet again to open the third set and led 2-0, but the Russian did not give her another break point the rest of the way.

Dementieva levelled the set at 2-2 by breaking Huber in the fourth game and Huber was in danger again in the sixth but survived double break point before holding for 3-3.

Dementieva scored the key break in the eighth game and served out for the match.

"I guess I should have won," said Huber. "But she's a very tough good player. She's tough."
