Hingis: Showed off her volleying skills
Martina Hingis (Swi) bt Kristina Brandi (US) 6-1 6-1

Martina Hingis turned up the heat on her rivals with a comprehensive victory over American star Kristina Brandi.

The top seed crushed Brandi 6-1, 6-1, dropping just 23 points and hitting 27 winners on her way to victory.

Brandi was not flattered by the score and could not be faulted for her efforts as she broke the Hingis serve once in each set.

But the Swiss teenager, who was eager to show off her volleying skills, completed the straight sets victory with a fine forehand winner on return of serve.

The 19-year-old, seeking her first Grand Slam title since last year's Australian Open, faces Italy's 45th-ranked Tathiana Garbin next.
