Kournikova sparkles under the lights
Anna Kournikova
Kournikova was in a determined mood on Tuesday
Anna Kournikova, the women's 12th seed, moved into the second round of the US Open with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 win over American Holly Parkinson in the first of Tuesday's two night matches at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It was a successful return to New York for the ever-popular Russian teenager who missed last year's Open due to a stress fracture in her right foot.

The 19-year-old put together a pair of solid runs after dropping her serve once in each set to the 90th-ranked American, reeling off the last five games of the first set and taking the last four in the second.

In the second round Kournikova, still seeking her first professional title, will take on 92nd-ranked Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic.

Conchita Martinez

Another seed to progress from Tuesday's later matches was Spain's Conchita Martinez, who struggled past American Amy Frazier 6-3 2-6 6-3.

The seventh seed will now play either Hungary's Petra Mandula or compatriot Maria Antonio Sanchez Lorenzo.
