Paralympians honoured
British Paralympians celebrate
British Paralympic team had plenty to celebrate
Britain's hugely successful Paralympic team is recognised in the New Year Honours list, with five gold medallists receiving MBEs

Kenny Cairns MBE

Cairns, from Erskine, was one of a number of successes in the pool, winning four medals, including the gold in the S3 classification of the 100m freestyle.

This was a Paralympic record for one of the oldest members of the team, but the 43-year-old will also be remembered for a controversial race in the 200m freestyle in the S3 category.

His appeal over a reclassification dispute, along with James Anderson in the S2 category 50m backstroke, failed and he had to settle for silver.

Vicki Broadribb MBE

Broadribb swam to gold and a new world record in the S2 classification of the women's 50m freestyle.

The 24-year-old from Birmingham recorded a time of one minute 15.46secs in beating Ireland's Mairead Berry.

Vicki's success comes on the back of claiming a bronze in the same event four years ago in Atlanta.

Caroline Innes MBE

Innes, who has Cerebral Palsy, was yet another Scottish swimming gold medallist and stormed home in the T36 classification of the women's 400 metres.

She claimed a new world record time of 1 minute 16.65 seconds, smashing Hazel Robson's previous world's best by nearly six seconds.

The 26-year-old part-time lecturer from Fyfe achieved an incredible haul of medals, including another gold in the 200m and a silver in the 100m. She also became engaged while in Sydney.

Isabel Newstead MBE

Glasgow-born Newstead struck gold in the SH1 classification of the women's 10m air pistol.

Newstead, 45, who now lives in Harlow, claimed a new world record total of 474.6.

A broken hip three days before the 1996 Paralympics did not stop her from competing, and she has now claimed gold in three different sports at the Paralympics (athletics and swimming the others) since 1988.

Lee Pearson MBE

Made his Paralympic debut in scintillating style by winning an incredible three golds in equestrianism.

The 26-year-old from Staffordshire claimed top prize in the Individual Dressage Grade One championship, in the freestyle to music and was also part of the dressage team.

Pearson was the first man to compete for Britain in equestrianism at the Paralympic Games.

The Press Officer for the British Paralympic team, Caroline Searle had nothing but praise for the team.

"It is a tremendous finish to a remarkable year for the British Paralympic team which achieved so much in Sydney producing its best result of the modern era," Searle remarked.
