Clement confounds critics
The unpredictable Clement defeats Grosjean
Arnaud Clement's progression to the Australian Open final surprised a fair few fans and pundits, not least BBC tennis correspondent Iain Carter.
Each day from Melbourne Iain put his reputation on the line by predicting the results of featured matches. A 54% success rate saved his blushes, but a little faith in the Frenchman would have brought even better returns. One of Iain's first predictions was that Greg Rusedski would beat the number 15 seed, especially after the Brit had just defeated top seed Gustavo Kuerten. Right? Wrong. Then he had Yevgeny Kafelnikov to end Clement's run in four sets. Wrong again. When Sebastien Grosjean was two sets up on Clement in the semi-final it looked like third time lucky for Mr Carter who again predicted an exit for the stubborn Frenchman. Again he was proven wrong. Clement fought back to win a five sets epic and reached the final where he faced Andre Agassi. When Iain tipped the American to win in four sets, victory was practically assured for Clement but Agassi prevailed, even though it only took three sets to complete the task. Still nobody's perfect. Over the two weeks of competition Iain Carter predicted the outcome of 26 leading matches, calling 14 correctly.
