Mixed joy for Ferreira and Morariu
Corina Morariu and Ellis Ferreira after winning the title
Birthday girl Corina Morariu and Ellis Ferreira beat Joshua Eagle
and Barbara Schett 6-1 6-3 to clinch the mixed doubles
title of the Australian Open on Sunday.
It was the second Grand Slam trophy for each of the winners. Morariu and Lindsay Davenport won the women's doubles at Wimbledon in 1999. The pair always looked in control of the match, crushing Eagle and Schett in the first set 6-1 and getting an early break in the second.
Ferreira and Rick Leach won the men's last year at the Australian Open against Wayne Black and Andrew Kratzmann, and their fifth set of 18-16 was twice as long as Sunday's entire match. It was Morariu's 23rd birthday on Friday but she had no reason to celebrate after letting a 3-1 lead slip away in the final set and lost the women's doubles final to American compatriots Venus and Serena Williams. "I got a little belated birthday present," said Morariu after picking up the mixed doubles trophy.
