Great Britain handballers edged out by Finland

GB handball team crash out in Helsinki

Great Britain's men ended their World Championship qualifying campaign on a disappointing note as they lost their final match 35-21 to hosts Finland.

A lack of strength in depth proved their downfall in what was their 13th game in 22 days.

Steven Larsson carried most of the British threat with 12 goals, but the fact the next highest scorer was Mark Hawkins with three told its own story.

"It was hard but a great experience," said GB coach Bill Baillie.

The game against Finland was widely seen as Great Britain's best chance of a victory in the qualifying tournament, but they fell just short, despite having the better of the first half of the match.

"We've shown we can compete with many teams, but we just need to keep it together, learn from our mistakes and perhaps got more strength in depth so that we can compete for the full 60 minutes," said Baillie, looking back at the tournament.

"It's been very good experience and it has shown a lot of the players where we need to be. It's put us in good stead for our next camp in April, where we will continue the good work and move forward."
