Beem grabs USPGA glory
Beem plays out of the bunker on the eighth
Beem held his nerve over the final 18 holes

Rich Beem held off the challenge of Tiger Woods to win the USPGA title at Hazeltine.

The unheralded American produced an inspired round to claim a memorable victory by one shot from Woods.

Final totals
Rich Beem 278
Tiger Woods 279
Chris Riley 283
Fred Funk 284
Justin Leonard 284

Starting the final round at six under, three behind overnight leader Justin Leonard, Beem fired a 68 to finish on 10 under and secure his first major.

Woods mounted a stirring final day run of his own to finish with a 67, but was left to rue bogeys on 13 and 14.

The 31-year-old Beem, who was appearing in only his fourth major, revelled in the big-match atmosphere to claim just his third Tour win.

Playing with Leonard, he reached the turn in 34 and then produced a match-winning eagle on the 11th to move four clear.

He birdied the 13th to extend his lead to five, but the first signs of nerves surfaced with a bogey at the 15th.

Woods narrowed the gap to three shots after successive birdies, but Beem cast aside any doubts with a monster 35-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

That left him two clear playing the 18th - and his approach into the green meant he had three putts for the title.

He needed all of them, but the Wanamaker Trophy was his.

As for overnight leader Leonard, his hopes effectively ended with a double bogey at the eighth after finding the water from the tee.

Chris Riley, who started the day at three under, made a surge up the field to get to six under.

But he ultimately fell short, as did Fred Funk.

It was left to Woods to mount the only serious challenge to Beem, but even his charge came too late to deny the unfancied Texan.
