Phil Mickelson celebrates with David Toms
Mickelson hit two wonder shots in the space of two holes

Phil Mickelson and David Toms were embroiled in a tense battle with European rookies Pierre Fulke and Phillip Price when Mickelson turned on the style.

Phil Mickelson's fairway wood set up an eagle at 15

The Americans went to the 15th with a one-hole lead in their morning foursomes match after winning the previous two holes.

And Mickelson slammed the door shut on the 545-yard par five with a majestic fairway wood which rolled to within two feet of the pin to set up an eagle.

With the USA two up, Toms then handed their opponents a glimmer of light when he found a greenside bunker on the 16th, leaving Mickelson with a seemingly impossible lie.

The left-hander was forced to address the ball with his front leg bent as it was nestling right under the lip.

But he produced a miraculous recovery, letting go of the club as he struck the ball to within inches of the hole.

It was good enough for a half and Mickelson and Toms sealed a 2&1 victory soon after.
