Verplank wipes out Westwood
Scott Verplank played brilliantly from the start
Verplank claimed the first three holes against Westwood
Lee Westwood v Scott Verplank
(United States won 2&1)

Scott Verplank's stunning performance boosted the USA and saw off the challenge of Lee Westwood.

The wild card rookie looked unflappable from the start, and ran out a deserved winner.

Verplank began the match in sensational style, giving the Americans some rare early cheer on Sunday.

He birdied the first and claimed an eagle at the third to establish an immediate three-hole lead.

The Englishman could not land a blow until the fourth, when he reduced the deficit.

But after further exchanges, Verplank remained two in front heading into the back nine.

He extended the advantage at the 11th, and even confidently gestured to the crowd when matching Westwood's birdie at the next.

The European player reduced the lead to two at the 15th, but Verplank sealed victory with a hole to spare.
