The fairway

The rules you need to know for the fairway

The fairway is the strip of closely-mown grass which usually runs from tee to green.

As a general rule in golf, the ball should always be played as it lies, which means you can't move it to a better spot.

However in the winter season, some clubs introduce 'winter rules' to protect the course.

Under these rules, players are allowed to pick up and wipe their ball before placing it within a specified distance, often a club's length, of where it originally lay.

You may not use divots or loose grass to build up the ball or press down the grass with your club.
