Hole 9 at Augusta

A lot of people are surprised by the elevations at Augusta - it must be 200 feet down from the clubhouse to the bottom end of the course.

This hole swings around the trees down the hill and then you go across this big valley to a raised green once again.

This is where I have seen some of the cruellest second shots.

A ball lands just beside the pin and you think "that's a beauty" - but then it takes an extra bit of spin, comes back off the green and ends up 50 yards short down the fairway.

It happened to Greg Norman when he lost that six-shot lead in 1996. He did not do much wrong but it cost him dear.

Or you get a shot which looks to have been hit too hard, sometimes by as much as two clubs. But it bites on the right spot of the green at the back, maybe bounces on the fringe, the spin takes over and suddenly begins dribbling back and ends up stone dead.

There is quite a lot of luck attached to the second shot on the ninth.
