Wales' Becky Brewerton has recorded her first ever hole in one during the 2010 Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.

The two-time Ladies European Tour tournament champion aced the par three 12th hole using a five-iron during the third round.

"My first ever hole in one - fantastic!" Brewerton said.

"To have it here, at this tournament as well, was brilliant. The shot was great all the way."

However, Brewerton had to rely on crowd reaction to confirm the shot.

She said: "It looked really good but I couldn't see it go in. There was quite a big crowd to the left of the green and they all went nuts.

"I didn't know what to do with myself. I think it was 165 to the pin, the wind was coming really strong right to left across the green so we decided to try and cut one and move it up into the breeze.

It couldn't have been more perfect a shot. It was a five-iron cut into the breeze, which was from right to left

"We moved up a club and it came off perfect. The whole way, the shot felt great as soon as it left the club and it was straight on line and holed at the pin all the way.

"I think it pitched about three feet short and rolled in so it was fantastic.

"It couldn't have been more perfect a shot. It was a five-iron cut into the breeze, which was from right to left."

Brewerton carded rounds of 73, 73 and 71 to finish the third day at 217, one over par with Sunday's round to go.

That left her as the best placed of the six British players remaining in the championship.

Henrietta Zuel finished at four over par, with Melissa Reid, Janice Moodie and Laura Davies on six over and Florentyna Parker five shots back.

Taiwan's Yani Tseng produced an eagle three at the final hole to retain her four-shot lead after the third round.
